Dental Implants Orlando Families Rely On
Missing teeth don’t look the best, but the unseen effects on your smile can be even more detrimental. Traditional tooth replacement options like crowns, bridges, and dentures only restore the visible portions of teeth, but dental implants replace the entire dental structure from the roots up. This makes implants the ideal dental restoration to protect gum tissue and jawbone density. Even if teeth are replaced traditionally, the gums and bone below remain susceptible to degradation without the supporting root structure, but with dental implants, gums and jaw receive the support and stimulation necessary for healthy tissue growth and retention. In the long term, this prevents facial features from changing, additional tooth loss, and issues with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) function.
What is the Dental Implant Procedure?
The dental implant procedure is comprised of three phases: preparation, implant placement, and prosthetic attachment.
Preparation – Before implants can be placed, Dr. Maali and the Sand Lake Family Dental team need to thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, and jaw to ensure you are healthy enough for implant surgery. Thanks to advances in technology, more people than ever are able to safely receive implants, but you will still need to visit our office for a consultation.
Implant placement – If we determine that you are a good candidate for dental implants, you will schedule an implant surgery. This is a minor medical procedure that is typically completed in less than hour with minimal discomfort. A small, titanium implant post is inserted below the gum line. Following the procedure, a period of three to six months is required to allow gums to heal and the implant to fuse with the jaw bone for optimum prosthetic support.
Prosthetic attachment – Once the gums heal and the implant posts fuse, Dr. Maali will permanently attach your replacement teeth to the post with abutments. These small attachment pieces allow the dental prosthetic to fit snuggly to the post with optimum support. Then, you’ll leave our office with a flawless, natural looking and feeling smile.
Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?
The only way to know for sure that you are a viable candidate for implant placement surgery is to schedule a dental implant consultation with Dr. Maali. However, most patients healthy enough for minor medical procedures can receive implants. Patients with chronic or immune-compromising diseases may be at a greater risk for complications associated with post-surgical healing and health. Make sure Dr. Maali is aware of all current health conditions and medications to avoid possibly dangerous complications.
How Long Does the Process Take?
The dental implant process takes several months and multiple dental visits, but the result is a beautiful, permanent smile. Unlike traditional tooth replacements like dentures and partials, implant-supported dental prosthetics are securely anchored to titanium posts which mimic the function of the tooth roots. This means patients are able to eat even the chewiest foods, and no special at-home hygiene is necessary. Just brush and floss daily.
